PET

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT), or PET/CT
PET/CT delivers what no other imaging technology can, a precise view of how the body functions, as well as anatomical identifiers at the same time. It is a non-invasive exam that is utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of cancer therapy, allowing the physicians to make more timely adjustments to their patient's therapy regime.

PREPARATION
Do not eat or drink anything except plain water for 4-6 hours before the exam. Take your medication as directed by your doctor. Avoid rigorous activity for 24 hours before the exam. If you are diabetic, eat a small meal 4 hours before your exam and take your insulin, if necessary. Ensure that your glucose levels are within normal limits, or the exam will need to be rescheduled.

EXAM DESCRIPTION
You will receive a small injection of radioactive tracer. You rest comfortably for 45-90 minutes while radioactive tracer moves through your body. Then the technologist brings you to the scanner. You may be asked to hold your breath for several seconds during the exam. Try to remain still while the scan is in process. After your scan, you may resume your normal activity level. The injected radioactive tracer quickly leaves your body. To expedite this process, drink plenty of water.

LENGTH OF TIME INVOLVED:

Total time for the radioactive tracer movement and scanning is approximately 1-2 hours.
