Frequently Asked Questions
What is home health care?
Home health care provides services to people recovering from an illness, surgery or rehabilitation who may need ongoing assistance and monitoring in their home. Home care can range from a one half-hour intermittent visit to 24-hour coverage per day. We work 365 days a year.
Are you a non-profit organization?
Yes, we are a non-profit, Medicare-certified organization that has been serving individuals and families since 1929.
What is Covenant VNA’s coverage area?
The VNA provides services throughout Saginaw, Bay, Huron, Sanilac, Midland and Tuscola counties.
How does a patient begin receiving services?
Patients can be referred to VNA by a physician, hospital, nursing home, family member, friend or themselves. Call 989.799.6020 and ask for the intake department for assistance on receiving home care services.
What types of professionals are on the VNA’s home health care team?
We are proud to have a team of health care professionals including physicians, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, home health aides, social workers, and physical, occupational and speech therapists who coordinate care based on an individual’s needs.
A nurse or therapist will make the first visit to assess the client. Your VNA staff member will contact the patient’s physician with a report. A care plan will be developed by the VNA care team, along with the patient and family.
My friend said I have to be “homebound” to receive services. What does that mean?
Medicare and many insurances require patients be “homebound” to qualify for home health services. That means it is difficult for you to leave home. It does not mean you are bedbound or can never leave your home. If you leave home infrequently because it requires so much effort, you may meet the homebound requirement. You can call us at 989.799.6020 and ask for the intake department to clarify your homebound status.
What is the method of payment for VNA’s home health care?
Most Covenant VNA services are certified for reimbursement through Medicare and Medicaid. Covenant VNA participates with most commercial insurers and HMOs, and accepts private payments.
Services are provided regardless of age, race, gender, sexual preference, religion, national origin or ability to pay. Financial assistance is available to qualified uninsured and underinsured patients.
Will my insurance cover home health care?
Most of our services are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and many private insurances. We have financial assistance programs for families who qualify. Contact us at 989.799.6020 and our staff can assist you with verifying if your insurance covers home health care.
What if that’s not enough?
We also have private pay services available through Visiting Nurse Special Services (VNSS) to families who need a little extra help. Private pay services could include in-home lab draws, transportation, bath aides, meal preparation and light housekeeping, and Lifeline personal emergency response systems. Because VNA and VNSS are affiliated, it is easy for us to coordinate both insurance-covered services and private pay services. Either speak to your nurse or call VNSS at 989.797.0828 for more details on private pay services.
