While many believe a sports medicine physician exclusively works with professional and elite athletes, the knowledge of a sports medicine physician is applicable to athletes of all ages and abilities. In fact, the principles of sports medicine can be utilized in any patient with a musculoskeletal complaint.
As a sports medicine physician, Dr. Purchase has received additional specialized training in the comprehensive treatment of athletes, active individuals, and teams. This training involved many aspects in the care of these patients, with a strong focus on diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal conditions.
Roughly 90% of all sports-related injuries do not require surgery. Therefore, a sports medicine physician can manage most musculoskeletal issues. This may also include minor office-based procedures such as injection therapy. When a surgical issue is identified, a referral to an orthopaedic surgeon can be expedited. Home therapy and exercises are often prescribed; however, the sports medicine physician can work with the patient regarding referrals for services such as physical therapy.
