Cancer Prevention & Screening: Be Proactive
Most of us would prefer to avoid the whole cancer “thing” altogether, right?
That is why Covenant’s cancer care experts are continuously focused on prevention and screening. Everyone can take proactive steps to minimize the risk of cancer in their lives. Tops on the list are:
• Eating a healthy diet full of colorful, fresh foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats rather than heavily processed foods, sugary beverages, high-fat salty snacks or other junk food
• Exercising regularly – at least 30 minutes a day, 5-7 days a week
• Maintaining a healthy weight
• Enjoying the outdoors and fresh air after applying and reapplying plenty of sunscreen
• Kicking the smoking habit
Another important cancer prevention strategy is screening. Screening tests like mammograms, prostate exams, low-dose CT scans of the lung, and colonoscopies look for cancer in people who don’t have symptoms. The goal is to find cancer early when it’s easier to treat and cure.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, estimates suggest that more than 40% of people due for routine screening exams missed them. Some are hesitant to come to the hospital because of fear of exposure to COVID-19. Rest assured that Covenant has put in place all necessary precautions to keep you safe during cancer screenings.
If you had an appointment for screening that was postponed or cancelled during the pandemic, talk to your healthcare provider and RESCHEDULE NOW! It’s safe. And we are ready to help you prevent cancer.
