You’re home from the hospital with your baby—what now? Helpful tips for your first month

The first few hours, days and weeks with your baby can be equally terrifying and terrific. Newborns require round-the-clock care, and it can sometimes be a shock to discover exactly what that entails. As a new parent, you’re guaranteed to hear a lot of crying and feel more tired than ever, but there are things you can do to make the first month home with your baby more comfortable for everyone.

These simple tips could help you get through the first month—or at least the next few hours—more easily:

Get sleep when you can
Take advantage of sleep when your baby is sleeping. Midday naps can help keep you energized for the rest of the day and night. If you’re unable to fall asleep when your baby does, at least try to lie down, take deep breaths and clear your mind. By doing this, you’ll be mentally and emotionally refreshed when your baby wakes up.

Accept help from loved ones
If someone offers to help once your baby is home from the hospital, don’t be afraid to say yes. Allow people to watch your baby while you shower or sleep (as you’re comfortable), bring dinners over, take care of yard work and more. By taking additional stress off your shoulders, you’ll be able to better care for yourself and your baby in the long run.

Let go of past routines
Sure, you may have kept a spotless house before your baby was born. But you know what? The dishes can stay in the sink and the laundry can stay unfolded a little longer than usual. The sooner you let go of past notions of perfection and routine, the easier the transition into parenting will be.

Stick with breastfeeding
Breastfeeding has countless benefits for your baby, so it’s important to stick with it. Set small goals for yourself and lean on your spouse, friends and family for support. If you plan on returning to work, start pumping after feeding sessions to build up a good supply of milk before you go back.

Welcome your emotions
Be prepared for an emotional roller coaster. Parenthood is full of highs and lows, and if you find yourself crying for no reason, don’t be too hard on yourself. Make time for little things like getting out in the sun, relaxing with a cup of tea or having an adult conversation. These small actions can make a significant difference.

No matter how much help you have or how prepared you are, the first month home with your baby can have its challenges. Knowing how to embrace the changes that parenthood brings and lean on loved ones for support can make this transition more seamless and keep you and your baby happier.
