Medical ICU (Harrison)
A 12-bed unit dedicated to providing adult intensive care monitoring and care. Most frequent diagnoses/problems include: pre- and post-partum high-risk obstetrics, renal insufficiency, ventilator management, medication overdose, and medical and surgical emergencies.

Surgical ICU (Cooper)
A 14-bed unit dedicated to providing adult intensive monitoring and care. Most frequent diagnoses/problems include: complex post coronary bypass surgical procedures, major small and large bowel procedures, cerebrovascular trauma/disorders/procedures, major chest procedures, ventilator management, major vascular procedures 24 and medical/surgical emergencies.

Cardiovascular ICU (Cooper)
A 14-bed unit dedicated to providing adult intensive monitoring and care. The most frequent diagnoses/conditions include: chest pain, acute myocardial infarction, cardiac dysrhythmias, congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, renal insufficiency, and ventilator management.

Neuro Trauma ICU (Cooper)
A 10-bed unit dedicated to providing adult intensive monitoring and care. The most frequent diagnoses/condition include: neuro trauma, trauma with primary diagnosis of head injury, intracranial hemorrhages, CVA needing critical care, VCAs receiving TPA and craniotomies.

Neuro Trauma Progressive Care Unit (Cooper)
A 31-bed unit dedicated to providing progressive neuro monitoring and care. All beds are capable of telemetry monitoring. Most frequent diagnoses include: post head traumas, CVAs, TIA, post carotid endarectomy, cervical laminectomy, and seizure activity. Services are provided 24 hours per day.

Progressive Cardiovascular Unit (Cooper)
A 27-bed progressive care unit providing care for the adult open-heart surgery patient, angioplasty and cardiac catheterization procedure, vascular surgery patients, and, additionally, for the care and treatment of a variety of cardiac/medical conditions. All beds have telemetry capability.

Progressive Cardiac Care Unit (Cooper)
A 52-bed progressive care unit providing care and treatment for adult patients with various cardiovascular disorders, dysrhythmias, and a variety of medical conditions. All beds have telemetry capability.

Moderate Care 6 North (Cooper)
A 20-bed mixed acuity unit with capability to care for up to 5 intensive care patients to meet surge capacity needs, cardiac telemetry, medical telemetry and medical/surgical patient populations. All beds have telemetry capability.

Post-Surgical (Harrison)
A 31-bed adult inpatient unit providing care for general surgical, urogynecological surgical patients who are in varying stages of recuperation from diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. Most frequent diagnoses include: small and large bowel procedures, hysterectomies, uterine fibroids, endometrial cancer, ureteral calculus, female reproductive system reconstruction, esophagitis and gastroenteritis. This unit also provides care for the bariatric surgical patients. This unit provides cardiac monitoring for 16 beds. Ages of patients are adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Generally, patients under 15-years are not admitted to this unit.

Medical Surgical (Harrison)
A 21-bed surge capacity unit is utilized for both adult and pediatric overflow as needed during peak census. 16 beds have telemetry capability.

Medical Renal 6 Main (Harrison)
A 30-bed adult medical inpatient unit providing care for renal and general medical patients. Most frequent diagnoses include: hemodialysis, pneumonia, syncope and collapse, volume depletion disorder, embolism and thrombosis, COPD, CHF, TIA, urinary tract infection, cellulitis and abscess. This unit provides cardiac monitoring for 16 beds. Generally, patients under 15-years of age are not admitted to this unit.

Medical Oncology (Harrison)
A 30-bed adult inpatient unit providing care for oncology and general medical patients. Most frequent diagnoses include: chemotherapy, red blood cell disorders, respiratory neoplasms, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, esophagitis, gastroenteritis and miscellaneous digestive disorders, kidney and urinary tract infections, nutritional and miscellaneous metabolic disorders, major hematologic/immunologic disorders, and septicemia. This unit provides cardiac monitoring for 16 beds. Generally, patients under 15 years of age are not admitted to this unit.

Medical Pulmonary (Cooper)
A 48-bed adult inpatient unit, divided in two geographic locations, providing care for pulmonary and general medical patients. Most frequent diagnoses include: COPD, pneumonia, asthma, TIA, CHF, cerebral artery occlusion, urinary tract infection, cellulitis and abscess. This unit provides cardiac monitoring for 34 beds (18 beds-5 East; 16 beds-3 South). Harrison 3 South has a focused provider group of Hospital Medicine physicians. Generally, patients under 15 years of age are not admitted to this unit.

Orthopaedics (Cooper)
A 40-bed adult inpatient unit providing care for the general surgical, orthopedic, and neurosurgical patients. Most frequent diagnoses include: major joint and limb procedures, hip, femur and knee procedures, medical back problems, shoulder, elbow or forearm procedures, and specific cerebrovascular disorders. This unit provides cardiac monitoring for 8 beds. Generally, patients under 15 years of age are not admitted to this unit.

Resource Team
A work group consisting of RN’s and NCA’s, that provides relief staffing for the Cooper/Harrison/Michigan patient care areas. This group is centrally controlled and deployed on a shift-by-shift basis to supplement unit staffing. The RNs have multiple skill set providing care for the Critical Care, Progressive Care, Medical and Surgical patients.

Patient Services Support
This is a multi-team work group that provides support throughout all clinical areas. It consists of the Shift Administrators, REACH Team, Patient Placement, the Central Staffing Office and the float Health Unit Coordinators.

The Shift Administrators are Registered Nurses who provide clinical and administrative leadership during the evening and weekend hours in the absence of Managers and Coordinators. They oversee the placement of patients, patient throughput, staffing allocation, the REACH Team and the Central Staffing Office. They are responsible for the safe delivery of patient care during off hours. They provide assistance with Customer Service and Service Recovery as needed.

The REACH team is a specialized team of RNs with clinical expertise that provide rapid response assistance 24 hours per day. The purpose of this team is to assist the bedside nurse in evaluating patient’s condition by identifying early signs and symptoms of patients deteriorating status and perform appropriate interventions expeditiously.

Emergency Care Center
A 65-bed emergency service that offers emergency care 24 hours a day. Along with being part of a Primary Stroke Center and a Level II adult and pediatric trauma center, the department also boasts the region's first Senior Care Center. The purpose of the department is to provide medical and nursing care to any person seeking treatment for a medical and/or injury complaint as well as respond to the community’s need for emergency services. The Emergency Department assesses, intervenes, evaluates, stabilizes, and discharges patients with specific instructions for follow-up care or admits to the appropriate area of service. The Emergency Care Center has approximately 90,000 visits annually.

Observation Unit (OU)
A 15-bed outpatient clinical decision unit with three additional outpatient infusion recliners, located directly below the Emergency Care Center. This area offers ongoing short-term treatment, assessment and reassessment while a decision is being made regarding whether patients will require further treatment as hospital inpatients or if they are able to be discharged from the hospital. 25% of the patients need further care and are admitted to an inpatient bed. The three infusion chairs are used to address the needs of patients who need frequent infusion of medication. This unit is the overflow area for inpatients when the hospital is at capacity.

Obstetrical Services (Harrison)
The Obstetrical Services provides complete labor and delivery services, including management of high risk pregnancies, LDRs, normal newborn and postpartum care, and antepartum surveillance. The Women’s Wing provides postoperative care for GYN patients. Services are provided 24 hours per day to adolescent/adult females and neonates.

Regional Neonatal ICU (Harrison)
This is a regional unit accepting transfers of neonates in need of tertiary care. The Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 40 beds for acute intensive care and 15 for progressive care. The components are capable of flexing up or down to accommodate fluctuation in census and acuity. This unit has an average daily census of approximately 33 neonates.

Intensive Care: Provides care 24 hours a day for infants with respiratory distress or failure; known or suspected sepsis or other infectious diseases; gastrointestinal conditions requiring intravenous fluids, parenteral nutrition, or complicated enteral feedings, including pre and post-operative care; congenital or acquired heart disease whose medical condition requires oxygen or ventilator treatments, isotropic or chronotropic support; neurological disorders; hematological disorders; hyperbilirubinemia requiring intensive therapy; prematurity and related sequelae; and other conditions that require NICU for monitoring, evaluation, and treatment. Care for infants at this level of acuity is provided in the main unit on the fifth floor.

Progressive Care: Provides 24 hour a day care for infants who were once at the acute level yet have continued needs still requiring services of the NICU including continuous monitoring. Care is provided within the NICU on fifth floor or in NICU room nine situated on the fourth floor. Room nine is equipped and staffed identically as the main unit and is put into service as an interim measure to relieve overcrowding and support safe delivery of care during episodes of high census and/or acuity.

Neonatal Nurse Practitioners: The Neonatal Nurse Practitioners are a group of advanced practice nurses (6.25 FTEs) working under the direction of the staff neonatologists. These staff have a combination of direct clinical responsibilities, managing the care of neonates in the NICU and at birth in the Birth Center, and clinical support responsibilities.

Pediatric Services (Harrison)
A 31-bed unit providing care 24 hours a day for patients through age 17. The focus of the unit is acute care of patients with varying medical/surgical conditions. Of the 31 beds, 8 are equipped to care for intensive care pediatric patients. An additional two monitored beds are available for moderate care patients. Patients are placed in intensive care or moderate care status based upon requirements for intensive monitoring and care related to trauma, ventilator management and medical/surgical emergencies.

Pediatric Intensivists
Twenty-four hour coverage for pediatric intensive care patients is provided by employed Pediatric Intensivists, with one filling the role of Medical Director. All patients in intensive care status are managed by the intensivist group. This staff participates in staff education and outreach education.

Operating Room Cooper Campus
The regular hours of operation, Monday through Friday are 0700-1530 with 4 rooms, 0700-2300 with 2 rooms, and 0700-1730 with 1 room. Two (2) Open Heart rooms are available Monday through Friday 0600-1830, with call covering the remaining hours. There is an RN and Surgical Technologist working 2300-0700, Saturday through Thursday. A weekender crew consisting of 1 RN and 2 surgical technologists are in house on weekends from 1700 Friday to 1900 Sunday. Saturday from 0700-1530, 2 rooms are available. Weekend cases are to be done on an urgent/emergent basis. Holidays are defined as New Years, Memorial, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Operating Room Harrison Campus
The regular hours of operation, Monday through Friday are from 0700-1530 with 4 rooms, 0700-1730 with 4 rooms, and 0700-2100 with 1 room. Urgent/emergency cases will be covered with the use of one call team after 2300. Weekend cases are covered by a call team for urgent/emergent cases only. Weekend call begins at 2100 on Friday and ends at 0700 on Monday. All elective cases must be done at the Cooper Campus on weekends.

POHA/PACU (Cooper)
The regular hours of operation are from 0600-2330, Monday through Friday and 0700-1530 Saturday. The non-regular hours of operation are from 2330-0600 Monday through Friday, weekends from 1530 Saturday to 0600 Monday, and the following holidays: New Year’s, Easter, Memorial, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. An on-call system exists to provide coverage for non-regular hours.

Cardiovascular Recovery
A 5-bed unit located adjacent to the adult open-heart surgical suites providing immediate post open-heart recovery care and treatment 24 hours per day. The expected length of stay is less than 24 hours. There are approximately 400 patients seen annually.

POHA/PACU (Harrison)
The regular hours of operation are from 0600-2230, Monday through Friday. The non-regular hours of operation are from 2130-0600, Monday through Friday. Weekend call begins on Friday at 2230 to 0600 Monday, and the following holidays: New Year’s, Easter, Memorial, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. An on-call system exists to provide coverage for non-regular hours.

Ambulatory (Cooper)
The regular hours of operation are from 0500-1900, Monday through Friday. Staffing is established based on the set hours of unit operation, general acuity, and average daily case volumes. This unit does not utilize a call system and is closed on recognized holidays.

Ambulatory (Harrison)
The regular hours of operation are from 0600-2130, Monday through Friday. Staffing is established based on the set hours of unit operation, general acuity, and average daily case volumes. This unit does not utilize a call system and is closed on recognized holidays.

Endoscopy (Harrison)
The regular hours of operation are 0700-1700, Monday through Friday. This unit’s non-regular hours are staffed by using an on-call system.

CVS Noninvasive – 900 Cooper, 2nd floor
The Noninvasive Cardiovascular Testing Center, located on the second floor of the 900 Building, provides the equipment and personnel to perform EKG, ICG, Holter monitoring, stress testing, echocardiography, transesophageal echocardiography, cardioversion and tilt table testing.

Cardiac Cath Lab – 700 Cooper, 2nd floor
The Cardiac Cath Lab provides the equipment and personnel to render services described as diagnostic (left heart caths, left and right heart caths, coronary angiograms, aortograms, endomyocardial biopsies, and coronary bypass graft angiograms) and those that can be therapeutic (PTCA, Rotoblator, stent, IVUS, Angiojet, atherectomy, pericardiocentesis, transvenous temporary pacing, IABP, LV assist devices, PFO and ASD closures, and valvuloplasty). These procedures are performed by board certified Cardiologists on the adult and geriatric patient populations. The cath lab is staffed Monday through Friday (with the exception of holidays), from 6:30am – 5:30 pm.

Electrophysiology Lab – 700 Cooper, 2nd floor
The EP Lab provides the equipment and personnel to render services described as diagnostic (EP studies, Carto mapping, intracardiac echocardiography and ICD evaluations) and those that can be therapeutic (RF ablations, CTA, pacemakers, Cardioversions, Carto mapping, transvenous temporary pacing, laserlead extractions and full system extractions). Board certified Electrophysiologists and Cardiologists perform these procedures on an adolescent, adult and geriatric population. The EP Lab is staffed Monday through Friday (with the exception of holidays), from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm or until cases are completed for the day.

Cardiovascular Recovery Unit – 900 Cooper, 2nd floor
The CVRU is responsible for the admission, preparation, recovery and discharge of all patients undergoing diagnostic or interventional cardiovascular procedures and special procedures in Radiology. The unit is open Monday through Friday, 24 hours a day.

Cardiac Rehabilitation – Mackinaw Campus, 2nd floor
Cardiac Rehabilitation is designed to provide comprehensive rehabilitative care to adults with cardiac and/or pulmonary related diseases. The unit has telemetry monitoring available for 12 patients at a time. Age groups served by this unit are those in young, middle and late adulthood, and the older adult.
